CHAPTER I
INTODUCTION
A.
Background
Problem
The learning method is an
important component for a teacher in achieving success teaching a class
material. Lots of learning methods commonly used in teaching and learning
activities, such as: Scientific Learning, Problem Based Learning, Project Based
Learning, etc. On this occasion, to find out how effective learning methods to
be applied, we as students of English Language Education carried out
observations at SMP NEGERI 1 SUMBANG. This learning observation is carried out
in class with high classification. By carrying out these observations, it is
hoped that we can find out how the teacher's role is in teaching the class.

Problem
Formulation
Based on the
background stated above, the formulation of the problem in this observation
report is:

How is the implementation of Teaching and Learning Activities
carried out by English teachers in the classroom?
2.
How to manage the class conducted by English teachers so that
Teaching and Learning Activities take place effectively?
3.
How to create a good learning method?

Objectives
The
objectives of this observation are as follows:
1.
To know the process of learning English directly in class.
2.
To find out effective learning methods, models and strategies used
in the English learning process.
3.
To find out the weaknesses of the methods applied by the teacher
in learning English.
CHAPTER
II
OBSERVATION
RESULT
A.
Observation Results
On this
occasion, we had the chance to observe English learning activities carried out
in SMP NEGERI 1 SUMBANG, on October 30, 2019 at 07.15 - 09.00
(2 hours). The students observed were students of class VIII C, SMP NEGERI 1 SUMBANG, totaling 32 students, with English subjects taught by Mrs.
Supini, S.Pd.
The observations made this time had the
opportunity to observe the “Asking Permission” material learning activities.
The asking permission material is English material to ask permission from
someone for the information needed.
The learning method used by the teacher in
the learning process that we observed is using the drilling method. The drilling
method is a method in which students repeat what the teacher has to say. It
aims to make students able to read correctly every word in the text of the
conversation.
The learning activities of students begin
with reading the conversation text in the textbook. Then students are asked to
imitate what the teacher has to say. Students say the sentences the teacher
conveys together.
After that, students are asked to come
forward to the class to read the conversation text. Learners read the
conversation text in groups. The activity is repeated until the whole group or
students come forward to the class.
The above activity is done repeatedly when
there is a conversation text that is in the package book. As for other
activities in the form of students to translate each conversation text that has
been presented. After all the material has been submitted by the teacher,
students are asked to draw conclusions from the learning that has been
delivered.

Based on observations that have been carried out, the atmosphere
of learning activities in the classroom looks less conducive.

Activity

Open lesson
The teacher enters the
classroom and greets with greetings. Then proceed with tadaruz Al-Qur'an for 10
minutes and sing the National Anthem of Indonesia Raya. Learners give greetings
to the teacher and read the prayer before starting the learning process and
then attend the presence of students.

Prepare teaching and learning equipment
The teacher together with
students prepare textbooks and other learning equipment.

Final
Activity (closing)
In the final activity the
teacher and the students conclude the learning material. At the end of the
lesson the teacher and the students reconcile the subject matter that has been
studied previously. Then close the meeting in class by saying hello and leaving
the classroom.
2.
The weaknesses of Learning activity
There are the weaknesses that contained in the learning activity in the class:
-
Learning with a
serious atmosphere and also strict supervision conducted by the teacher is very
easy to cause boredom in the classroom.

Exercises that
are always given under the guidance and instruction of the teacher can
undermine student initiative and creativity
-
Classes that
are not conducive lead to student concentration in learning.
B. New
Learning Method
Based
on the weaknesses related to the learning model above, we recommend using a new
learning method. Learning methods that are appropriate to the material and
conditions in the classroom are using the Scientific Learning. In the
scientific learning approach there are several steps that must be passed by the
students.
In
the material "Asking Permission" there are many dialogue conversations
that exist in the material. So to make learning material more fun and can
attract students' attention, learning media can be added in the form of hand
puppets. These hand puppets are used at the beginning of learning to attract
the attention of students in learning English.
The
steps in learning Scientific Learning, namely:
1. Observing
Students are given a
material-related skill which is asking Permission using the hand puppets.
Participants are asked to observe every conversation made by the hand puppets.
2. Questioning
Students are given
the opportunity to ask questions related to dialogue that has been given
earlier. Then, students are given questions by the teacher according the
material. These questions can be in the form of the topic have discussed, who
are the name of the characters in the conversation, and the purpose of the
conversation.
3. Data
collecting
After students ask
questions and are given questions by the teacher, students are asked to find
the phrases "Asking Permission" that are in the conversation and that
is in the learning book. Students are also asked to make sentences that can be
used to ask for permission except the sentences that already exist.
4. Associating
Students are asked to
make conversation text in groups. Then students are also asked to play the
conversation that they have been made in front of class.
5. Communicating
Students present the conversation text that has been made
in front of the class in groups. Other students can give comments or
suggestions related to the performance of each group.
CHAPTER
III
CLOSING
A. Conclusion
Based on
observations that have been made, it can be concluded that:
-
A conducive
learning process can be created if the learning methods applied are
appropriate.

The method
applied in class VIII C learning is a drilling method.

In carrying out
learning activities, teachers must pay attention to a number of things so that
learning objectives can be achieved, including by making the learning
atmosphere more interesting, and also being able to manage class well.
